Profile

Overview

Profile is the social networking tool for Sakai. The Profile tool allows members of the University of Windsor community to search for people by name or common interests, view their profiles, view their connections, add them as a connection, and much more. You can update your status and have it sent on to your Twitter account. The Profile tool has privacy by design and is “completely opt-in”, requiring interested community members to modify their Profile permissions and to add information before it can be shared.

Your Profile

Your profile page is the launchpad for Profile. You can add an image and keep your information up to date. It is also where you can post status updates and view your connections.

Activating the Profile Tool

If Profile is not already visible on your My Workspace site:

  1. Click Site Editor then Edit Tools
  2. Ensure that Profile (with the description of: edit your profile, post status updates, search for people with common interests, view their profile and add them as connections) has a check mark beside it
  3. Click Continue
  4. Click Finish to complete

Editing your profile

To edit your profile:

  1. Hover over any of the information sections and click Edit.
  2. Update your information and click Save changes.

Any fields you leave blank will be left out of your profile view.

You can also configure what information in your profile other people can see on your Privacy page.

Adding an image

Depending on how your system administrator has configured Profile, you will be able to either upload an image or add a URL to an existing image.

Uploading an image

To upload an image:

  1. On the profile page, hover over the profile image panel and click Change picture.
  2. A new panel will appear underneath. Depending on your browser you will be able to click Choose file or Browse to open a window to locate an image on your computer.
  3. Select your picture.
  4. Click Upload to upload your image.

The image you choose must be a valid image, ie JPEG, GIF or PNG and must not be larger than the maximum size set by your system administrator (default is 2Mb).

Adding an image via URL

To add an image via URL:

  1. On the profile page, hover over the profile image panel and click Change picture.
  2. A new panel will appear underneath. Type in, or paste the URL to the image in the field provided.
  3. Click Upload to upload your image.

Don't know where to store your image? Try adding your image to Resources in your My Workspace, make it public, then grab the URL to it!

Managing your pictures

In Profile you can create your own picture gallery, and view the picture galleries of other users and your connections.

Viewing pictures

When viewing your own pictures or the pictures of another user, clicking a picture provides an option to View image which provides a larger view of the selected picture. If viewing one of your own pictures, additional picture options are included with the larger view, such as Remove picture and Set as profile image.

The Add picture panel at the bottom of your gallery provides a button for choosing a picture to upload (Choose file), and a second button for uploading the picture (Upload chosen file) to your gallery.

When viewing an enlarged picture of yours, you have the option to Remove picture from your gallery.

Setting a picture as your profile image

When viewing an enlarged picture of yours, you have the option to Set as profile image the picture being viewed. This option will replace any existing profile image with the chosen gallery image.

Note:The image you choose must be a valid image, ie JPEG, GIF or PNG and must not be larger than the maximum size set by your system administrator (default is 2Mb).

Updating your status

Status updates are a good way to let other people know what you are up to or what's on your mind.

To post a status update

  1. On your Profile page, type something in the status box provided, that says ”say something”.
  2. Click Say it to post the update.

Note: you can only enter 140 characters, as this is the limit for the allotted characters on twitter

To remove a status update

  1. Click Clear next to your status message.

Status updates will also disappear when they are a week old.

Status updates can also be sent to your Twitter account, if you have one. You can manage this in your Preferences page.

You can also restrict who can see your status updates in your Privacy page.

You can search for people by name, email or common interest and even add them as a connection if you like.

Searching for people

To search for people by name or email

  1. On the Search page, type their name, email or part thereof, into the person's name or email search box.
  2. Click Search by name or email to find people that match your search parameters

The list of results will be returned underneath the search box. If your search returns too many results, you'll be prompted to refine your search.

When you search, you might have the option to Add them as a connection or View their connections. See below more for information on these actions.

Note: Depending on each person's individual privacy settings, what you see in the search results may be restricted. You too can control who can find you in searches and what other people see of your own profile in your privacy settings.

Managing your connections

In Profile you can search for people, view their profiles and add them as connections. They will then show up in your connections matrix on your Profile page, and in your Connections list.

Adding someone as a connection

When you are viewing someone else's profile, you might have the option to Add them as a connection under their profile picture. If so, click this link to open the confirmation window, then click Add connection. They will receive a notification, and be prompted to confirm your connection request.

Accepting or ignoring a connection request

If someone else adds you as a connection, you must first confirm that request before you are both connected, to decide whether or not you will be connected.

On the Connections page, click the green tick  check mark to accept or the red cross  cancel to ignore that friend request.

Managing your connections

On the Connections page you can remove connections by clicking the red cross  red cross.

Note: Email confirmations are sent whenever you add someone as a connection or accept a connection request, but are never sent when you ignore a connection request or remove a connection.

You can configure what email notifications are sent to you in your Preferences page.

Viewing other people's profiles

 Search results

When you search for people, or view your connections page, you can view other people's profile. You can also click through and view their connection's profiles, if they have allowed this in their own privacy settings.

When you are viewing someone else's profile, you might have the option to Add them as a connection. If so, click this link to open the confirmation window, then click Add connection. Depending on their settings, they will receive a notification, and be prompted to confirm your connection request.

Note: Depending on each person's individual privacy settings, what you see may be restricted to certain pieces of information. You too can control what other people see of your own profile in your privacy settings.

Messaging

You can send and read your messages from the Messages link on the top navigation bar.

Sending a message

To send a message:

  1. Click Compose message.
  2. A new panel will appear underneath. Start typing the name of one of your connections to get a list of connections you can send a message to, then select them from the list.
  3. Enter a message an optionally the subject.
  4. Click Send message when finished, and your message will be sent.

Reading and replying to your messages

To read your messages:

  1. Click My messages.
  2. If you have any messages, they will appear. Threads with unread messages will be highlighted.
  3. Click the subject of the message to open the thread.
  4. Here you can read the message and see the rest of the thread.
  5. If you want to reply, enter a message in the box and click Send message.

Privacy

On your privacy page you can control what parts of your profile other people can see. You can tailor this so that certain information is only available to you, to your connections, or to everyone.

To manage your privacy settings

  1. Click on the privacy link on the top navigation bar
  2. Select each “drop-down menu” for each item you wish to adjust, and make your preferred changes
  3. Click Save settings when you are finished.

Note: These settings take effect immediately.

Preferences

On your preferences page you can control what emails are sent you when various actions occur, choose what widgets are shown on your profile, manage your preference to an officially provided image (if configured) as well as manage the Twitter integration for your status updates.

To manage your email notifications

  1. Click the radio buttons to adjust the settings on or off for each preference.
  2. When you are finished, click Save settings

To manage the Twitter integration

  1. You must be connected to the internet.
  2. Click Link Twitter account which will open a new window and connect to Twitter.
  3. Follow the prompts to grant Profile access to post status updates to Twitter and you'll be presented with a PIN code.
  4. Back on the Preferences page, enter that PIN code in the box and click Link. Your details will be verified with Twitter.
  5. When you are finished, click Save settings

You can disable the Twitter integration by clicking Unlink.

Official profile image settings

If available, you can check the checkbox to use the official institutional profile image in place of any one you might have set yourself. You can disable this at any time and your profile will revert to the image you had set previously.

Widget settings

If available, you can choose what widgets appear on your profile. Hover over the  information "I" image icon for more information about each widget.

When you are finished, click Save settings.

How do I . . .?

How do I add my friend as a contact?

To begin, you must search for your friend using the Search tool.

  1. On the Search page, type their name, email or part thereof, into the person's name or email search box.
  2. Click Search by name or email to find people that match your search parameters
  3. The list of results will be returned underneath the search box. If your search returns too many results, you'll be prompted to refine your search.

How can I stop someone from sending me messages?

How to block people from sending messages

Only your accepted connections are initially able to send you messages.

There are two processes to prevent someone from sending you a message,

The first process involves blocking everybody from sending you messages. You do this by accessing your privacy settings.

  1. On your profile page, click Privacy.
  2. Find the drop-down menu that says "Who Can Send Me Messages?"
  3. Click "Nobody"' if you would not like to receive any messages from anyone.

The second process involves blocking a single person from your connections, which will ultimately block them from sending you messages.

  1. Click Connections
  2. Find the person whom you wish to remove from your profile
  3. On the right of their name, click the button that says "Remove Connection"

This will remove the contact from accessing your profile, in addition to disallowing them to send you messages.

How do I upload a picture to my wall?

On your profile main page, below your profile picture there is a section that says My Pictures. Below this, click the link that says Add new picture. From here, click Choose File. Choose the picture from your file, then click Upload chosen files. This will upload the photo that you had chosen, to your gallery and to your wall.

Why can't I see everyone in my class?

In order for a person to be connected to your profile, you must add them, or accept a request to be added to their profile sent by them. The profile tool is a more personal tool, used to connect with those who you choose to connect with, and it will not automatically connect you to anyone.

Can I add my class as a contact?

 How to limit search of connections to a specific class you are enrolled in

You cannot specifically choose to add your full class at once, but you can specify your search for a connection to only those whom are in your class.

  1. To do this, you must first acces the search tool in your profile.
  2. Check "Limit search to specific worksite"
  3. Chose which class worksite you would like to limit your search to
  4. Type in a persons name or email in the search bar
  5. Click Search
