Blackboard has some utilities to make importing and exporting of materials from an existing site into a new site fairly straightforward, thus saving the instructor hours of time if he/she had to create from scratch every time. Exporting from Original Site, and Course Copy

Exporting from the Original Blackboard Site

A short video explains how to perform the Export and Import options from one site to another. This video also contains a section on materials from our previous learning management system, CLEW. Exporting and Importing Using Blackboard video (7:54)

Import or Export Menu in Course
Import or Export Material in Course Site

Below, are the steps to export out of one Blackboard course and import into a new Blackboard course shell.

To access the Export/Archive Course page

  1. On the Control Panel, expand the Packages and Utilities section and click Export/Archive Course.
  2. On the Export/Archive Course page, click Export Package on the action bar.
  3. On the Export Course page, include only the links to course files -OR- include the links and copies of the course files content.
  4. In the Select Course Materials section, select the check boxes for each course area and tool to export.
    • If you select Discussion Board, decide whether to include started posts for each thread in each forum (anonymously) or include only forums with no starter posts.
  5. Click Submit.

How to Download the Course Package

When you submit the Archive or Export Course page, the system begins to create the course package. When the package is complete, you will receive an email from the system. Then, you can download the course package. Please wait until you have received the email, as the file you download prematurely, may not contain all of the data you need in the new course. This is especially important for courses with a lot of data or have large files in it.

  1. On the Control Panel, expand the Packages and Utilities section and click Export/Archive Course.
  2. Click the link for the package to download.
  3. Save the file to the appropriate location.

How to Import a Course Package

Once you have a destination course site (new course shell) where you wish to import material from a previous Blackboard site, you can do so by importing the file created in the steps above.

  1. On the Control Panel, expand the Packages and Utilities section and click Import Package/View Logs.
  2. Click Import Package.
  3. Provide the path to the course package or click Browse to search for the package.
  4. Select the course materials to include.
  5. Click Submit to complete.

Course Copy

These two short videos show you how to copy materials from one site to another. Part 1 discusses the basic complete course copy, while Part 2 discusses some considerations and custom cases, as well as preparing your site for the semester using the Date Management tool and template sites.

Step by step course copy

  1. Access the course you want to copy.
  2. On the Control Panel, expand the Packages and Utilities section and select Course Copy.
  3. Select the appropriate option:
    • Copy Course Materials into an Existing Course
  4. In the Destination Course ID box, copy the course ID from your UWindsor course shell (that is automatically generated) - before the Course Title in brackets on the upper left menu, and enter it into the text field
  5. Select the course materials that you want to copy over.
    • A course copy operation can't be completed if you don't select at least one of these areas: Content, Contacts, or Settings. If you don't select one, a warning appears and Blackboard Learn can't create a new course.
  1. In the File Attachments section, select the option to copy links to:
    • Copy Links to Course Files: No copies of linked files are included in the copy. The copied course will have the same set of links. Those links will point back to the original location of the link defined in the origin course.
    • Copy links and copies of the content: Make copies of linked files, but only those files that are linked. Files within the course's home folder that aren't linked to any content within the course aren't included in the copy.
    • Copy links and copies of the content (include entire course home folder): Make copies of all files in the course's home folder regardless of whether those files are linked to course content.
  2. You need to have manage permission on an item to include copies of those files. If you don't have this permission, you may be missing some files after the copy.

Select the Folder for Content Collection Files, if applicable.

  1. Don't select Enrollments, as your students for the new site (autogenerated) will automatically appear
  2. Select Submit.
