This is a current log of all Blackboard outage events.

Below is a list of our scheduled downtime such as for maintenance patches. This is in addition to our daily restarts which occur Monday-Friday from 5am-6am.

November 12 2019 3:50am-4:30am Inline Grading Issues Box, the vendor which hosts the inline grading found in Blackboard reported issues that could have potentially affected inline grading capabilities. Click the link to access Box's incident report.
November 4 2019 11am-12:30pm Inline Grading Issues Box, the vendor which hosts the inline grading found in Blackboard reported issues that caused all inline viewing and grading capabilities to be unavailable for approximately 1.5 hours. Click the link to access Box's incident report.
July 20, 2019, 7:16 pm until 8:37 am July 22, 2019 Multiple systems failure IT Services experienced a major electrical issue in the University Computer Centre which caused most primary and secondary systems to go offline. This included UWinsite, Blackboard, and a majority of small client-facing systems. Services were restored on July 22 at 8:37 am.
May 13, 2019, 6pm Backend Issues We experienced an issue with the database server that supports Blackboard which led to residual effects until the restart the following morning.

Blackboard was unavailable from 5:49pm to 6:03pm

May 3, 2019, 6:00 am to 7:24pm Upgrade features listed in the upgrade article Blackboard was unavailable to complete a feature update.
Apr 25, 2019 1:49 pm-3:41 pm Server Issues Shared file system partial fail. Service restored at 3:41 pm.
Apr 12 2019 3:00pm-3:20pm Downtime for system restart We experienced an issue with the backend hardware that supports Blackboard which led to a restart of the system, and Blackboard being unavailable from 3:00pm to 3:20pm.
Apr 3 2019 8:30am-10:45am Performance Issues We experienced an issue with the backend hardware that supports Blackboard which led to Blackboard being unavailable from 8:45am to 10:45am.
Jan 18 2019 Extended Downtime IT Services performed firewall maintenance from 5:30-7:30am, which resulted in Blackboard being unavailable during that time. Access to Blackboard was restored around 7:00am.
Jan 16 2019 8:00am-12:00pm Server Issues One of our servers experienced issues which caused users who were assigned to that server to experience issues when attempting to perform tasks such as editing assignments. The server was shut down around 11am and then returned to service around 12pm.
Jan 8 11:30-Jan 9 7:00am Mobile App Users of the Blackboard and Blackboard Instructor mobile apps were unable to search for the University of Windsor. Users with existing sessions or cached search results are not affected.
Dec 11 2018 Course Enrollments Due to an issue with data received from an upstream system, some students may have been completely removed from their Blackboard course sites. A fix was implemented by IT Services at 12:15pm which restored affected student's memberships.
Nov 30-Dec 1 2018 Course Enrollments Due to an issue with data received from an upstream system, some students may have been completely removed from their Blackboard course sites. A fix was implemented by IT Services on Dec 1 at 3:30 pm which restored all of the affected student's memberships.
Nov 23 2018 2:30pm-8:00pm System Unavailable/Slowness Blackboard became very slow to end users from 2:30pm-3:15pm. Additionally, Blackboard's hard drive ran out of space which caused errors for users who were attempting to upload files. This led to Blackboard being down from 7:30-8:00pm in order to free up disk space.
Nov 5 2018 11:00am-8:26pm Mobile App Outage During this time users of both the Blackboard and Blackboard instructor apps were unable to login or utilize a majority of the app functionality.
Oct 19 2018 2:30pm-3:15pm System Slowness Due to an issue with the backend hardware of Blackboard end users experienced slowness when accessing Blackboard,and may have seen a "one or more servers in unavailable.." message. A fix was implemented at 4:30pm which stabilized the system.
Oct 18 2018 11:00am-4:20pm System Unavailable/Slowness Due to an issue with the backend hardware of Blackboard end users experienced slowness when accessing Blackboard,and may have seen a "one or more servers in unavailable.." message. Errors were also seen when attempting to edit assessment items such as tests and rubrics. A system restart occurred at 4:00pm which resolved these issues.
Oct 18 2018 4:00-4:20pm Emergency Maintenance To resolve unexpected performance issues, a system restart occurred at 4:00pm, with Blackboard being returned to service around 4:20pm.
Sept 24 2018 12:40pm-4:14am (15) Mobile App Outage During this time users of both the Blackboard and Blackboard instructor apps were unable to login or utilize a majority of the app functionality.
August 23 6:00am-10am Issue accessing Courses/Organizations Due to an issue that occurring during our regular morning maintenance window, users received an error when they attempted to access any course or organization within Blackboard Learn. The system was restarted around 9am, which resolved the errors, and it was returned to service at 10am.
July 12-13, 2018 External Vendor Issues Box (The vendor of the inline annotation service) has reported issues with uploads and downloads with Box applications. Box is continuing to monitor these issues. More information can be found on Box's status page.
June 26, 2018 5:30 am - 6:45 am Extended Downtime Blackboard's regular morning downtime / maintenance period was extended from 5:30 am to 6:45 am on June 26, 2018, whereby IT Services tested and implemented a firewall update. Other services using the UWinCARD were affected, such as Food Services, GoPrint, vending machines, and laundry in the Residences.
June 12 2:00 pm-June 15 2:00 am SafeAssign Outage Blackboard's SafeAssign server ran out of space and documents submitted during this period will not be processed or receive a report. A resubmission will be necessary to receive a report.
June 11, 2018, 11:30 am-10:30pm System Performance Issues Blackboard experienced some slowness due to a database issue. A fix recommended by the vendor was applied around 10:30pm, which resolved the performance issues.
May 11, 2018, 5:00 am-7:10am System Maintenance IT Services performed network maintenance, resulting in Blackboard being unavailable from 5am to 7:10am.
May 4, 2018, 6:00 am-7:50am System Maintenance IT Services performed network maintenance which resulted in an extended downtime for Blackboard until 7:50am, instead of 6am.
May 1, 2018, 6 am-12:30pm System Upgrade A system upgrade was performed which took Blackboard offline from 6am to 12:30pm. This upgrade brings new functionality enhancements such as the ability to bulk delete grade centre columns among many others. Please refer to our upgrade information page for more details about the enhancements.

Update (11:35am): The installer is taking longer than anticipated, our new estimate for when Blackboard will be back online is 2pm. Update (12:30pm): The upgrade is complete, and Blackboard has been returned to service.

April 3, 2018, 11:30 AM-5:00 PM SafeAssign Emergency Maintenance Blackboard performed infrastructure updates yesterday however performance concerns require more maintenance to occur. Papers submitted to SafeAssign at the beginning of the maintenance ( 11:30-11:50) will not receive an originality report and must be resubmitted. Papers submitted after that period will be queued and processed once the maintenance is over. Blackboard is providing real time updates on the SafeAssign Status Page
April 2, 2018, 3:00 AM-11:00 AM SafeAssign Outage Blackboard performed infrastructure updates which will increase the performance and stability of SafeAssign. During this time, the service will be unavailable to accept papers and any student submissions made during this period will not receive Originality Reports. The maintenance was completed around 11am.
March 3, 2018, 12:01 AM-4 PM SafeAssign Outage Blackboard performed infrastructure upgrades at one of their data centres, which may result in delays in the processing of SafeAssign reports. This maintenance was completed and no downtime was reported.
March 1, 2018 Internet Outage People on campus may have experienced difficulty with accessing certain websites due to a fibre break in the Cambridge area. IT Services has redirected traffic, however, this may result in slower than normal access times. For more information refer to the hotnews article. The fibre break was fixed on March 2nd and has rebalanced traffic across all providers.
February 10-11, 2018 Box Outage Box, the company that supports New Box View, experienced an outage on Saturday night which resulted in documents not being shown inline. This was fixed by Box and documents were showing inline on Sunday. For more information, please refer to Box's Incident report.
January 5, 2018 Crocodocs Switchover The Crocodocs annotation tool is being replaced with a new service called Box. The switch took 1.5 hours and resulted in no downtime. For questions about New Box View, refer to our article Changes to Inline Grading-Effective January 2018
December 22, 2017, 7 am-11:15 am System Upgrade A system upgrade was performed which took Blackboard offline from 7 am to 11:15 am. This upgrade is to allow us to switch to a new document preview and inline annotation tool called New Box View in 2018.
November 12, 3 pm-November 13, 2017, 12:30 pm Blackboard Performance Issues We are experienced performance issues which lead to slow access times for end-users. Blackboard was taken offline around 11:30 am and access was restored around 12:30 pm.
November 10, 2017, 2:00 pm-2:15 pm Blackboard Performance Issues During this time users were unable to send emails with their announcements. Doing this caused the browser window to hang. This was resolved around 2:15 pm. All queued announcements were sent after that time.
November 9, 2017, 4:30 pm-8:3 0pm Blackboard Performance Issues During this time users were unable to send emails with their announcements. Doing this caused the browser window to hang. This was resolved around 8:30 pm. All queued announcements were sent after that time.
November 8, 2017, 12:10 pm-1:25 pm Login Issues During this time Blackboard rejected any new users from logging in, even though they were using the correct username and password. A permanent configuration change was made and access was restored around 1:25 pm.
November 7, 2017, 3:15 pm-4:15 pm Blackboard Performance Issues During this time users were unable to send emails with their announcements. Doing this caused the browser window to hang. This was resolved around 4:15 pm.
Sunday, November 5, 2017 IT System Upgrade IT Services will be performing infrastructure upgrades which resulted in Blackboard being unavailable from 7:45 am to 9:45 am.
October 29, 2017, 7:30 pm-10:30 pm Login Issues During this time Blackboard rejected any new users from logging in, even though they were using the correct username and password. This was resolved around 10:30 pm.
October 27, 2017, 10:30 am-4:20 pm ( Down from 3:20 pm to 4:20 pm) System performance issues The performance issues from yesterday (Oct 26) returned around 10:30 am, resulting in users' Blackboard pages never loading, or receiving a "server is unavailable" message. A full system restart was performed at 3:20 pm which resulted in an hour of downtime. Access to Blackboard was restored around 4:20 pm.
October 26, 2017, 9 am-3:30 pm Blackboard Slowness Blackboard experienced performance issues earlier today (October 26) but the problem has been resolved and service has returned to normal.

October 15, 2017, 6:00-8:30 pm Blackboard Unaccessible Due to internet connectivity problems on campus, Users could not connect to Blackboard ( among other university websites) if they were off-campus. This was resolved around 8:30 pm.
October 11, 2017, 5:00 am-8:00 am System Maintenance The LMS Team performed system maintenance to improve performance and stability of the system. Access to Blackboard was restored at 6:45 am.
October 6, 2017, 4:30 am-7:30 am System Maintenance IT Services performed system maintenance, which resulted in Blackboard being unavailable. Access to Blackboard was restored around 7:30 am, however, off-campus users experienced problems with connecting to Blackboard due to on-campus internet problems. This was resolved around 3 pm.
October 1, 2017, 5:30 am-11 am System Maintenance IT Services performed system maintenance that resulted in Blackboard being inaccessible from 5:30 am to 11 am, with SafeAssign and Crocodocs being restored around 1 pm.
September 27, 2017 Server Problems Due to one of our servers not starting up properly, users assigned to that server could not perform basic tasks such as sending announcements and received an error message when attempting to do so. That server was taken out of service at 11 am.
September 25, 2017 System Instability On September 25th, Users experienced extreme slowness when using Blackboard. Around 10 pm, Blackboard went offline momentarily. A system restart the following morning resolved the instability and slowness.
September 23, 2017, 12:00 pm-5:00 pm Notifications Unavailable During this period, Blackboard reported that you had no notifications even though it was indicated you did. A service was restarted and notifications are now visible.
September 14-September 15, 2017, 8 am (14) - 6 am (15) Assessment Issues Instructors are currently unable to create any assessments such as Tests, Surveys, Assignments or Rubrics. Students also encountered errors when submitting assessments. A restart of the system on the morning of September 15th resolved these issues.
August 24,2017, 7 am - 7:00 pm System Upgrade Please submit a ticket (http://www.uwindsor.ca/bbhelp) if any issues arise for you with your use of the system.
April 25, 2017 SafeAssign processing delayed Blackboard SafeAssign continues to experience high paper load. We are seeing delays in paper processing time up to 14 hours. Mar 6, 2017, 10AM-12PM 2017 Blackboard System Outage Blackboard was taken offline because of instability caused by a recent update. The issue has been corrected and Blackboard was returned to service around 12 PM.
February 28 - March 1, 2017 SafeAssign processing delayed Several web services were affected due to the large-scale Internet outage involving Amazon Web Services (AWS) on February 28. As a result, Blackboard Learn’s SafeAssign services were impacted. Due to the ongoing volume of paper processing involved, SafeAssign services experienced delays of up to 13 hours.
Jan 29, 2017, 7A M-12P M Blackboard System Upgrade Blackboard was taken offline to install an upgrade patch to address recent downtime concerns. The patch was successfully applied and Blackboard was returned to service around 12 PM.
Jan 16 1 PM-Jan 17 9 AM, 2017 Blackboard System Outage A database problem with Blackboard's server resulted in a shutdown while diagnostics were being run. Blackboard was returned to service at 9 am on Jan 17.
Jan 15 - Feb 15, 2017 Assignments - Crocodoc comments problem Service to the Crocodocs server (for inline annotations on assignments) became interrupted on Jan. 15. This caused issues with data storage of instructor-generated comments on assignments between January 15 to February 15, 2017. Blackboard implemented a solution to the problem and has since embedded pdf documents of assignments containing instructor comments into affected sites that both instructors and students can access by triggering the download button in the individual assignment. Affected instructors sent notification on Mar 2 of vendor solution.
Nov 3rd, 2016, 2 PM - 3 PM Blackboard System Outage A malfunction on Blackboard's application servers caused Blackboard services to stop. A restart of the system was required.
Sept 14th, 6 PM - Sept 15th, 7 AM, 2016 Blackboard Intermittent Connectivity A campus-wide network issue on Sept 14th knocked out connectivity to Blackboard and subsequently caused issues with the network hardware connecting Blackboard and other Uwindsor applications to the internet. This issue persisted throughout the night and into the early morning on Sept 15th before being resolved.
June 20th, 2016, 8 AM-9 AM Blackboard System Outage A hardware failure on the server chassis housing Blackboard brought Blackboard services to a halt. The hardware problem was fixed and service was restored within an hour.
June 13th, 2016, 7 AM-11 AM Blackboard System Outage Blackboard was unavailable during this time due to instability caused by the unexpected shutdown previously due to an air conditioner failure.
June 12th, 2016, 7:00 AM-5:30 PM Blackboard System Outage An air conditioner failed in the Computer Centre, causing most University systems, including Blackboard to shut down. Access to Blackboard was restored around 5:30 pm.
June 8th, 2016, 7-7: 30 PM Blackboard Login Issues The connection between Blackboard and its authentication service was interrupted and caused some users not to be able to log in during this period.
May 30th, 2016, 12-12: 30 PM Blackboard System Outage An error with the connection to the Blackboard database required Blackboard servers to be restarted.
May 11th, 2016, 7-8 AM Blackboard System Outage A network error caused Blackboard's database to go offline for approximately 45 minutes. Once the database was brought back online, Blackboard's application servers were restarted in order to remedy any lasting effects from the lost connection.
Feb 12th, 2016, 4:30 PM-7 PM Blackboard Login Issues Blackboard lost its connection to the University's authentication system. A configuration change was made to Blackboard to fix the issue and the problem was resolved.
Feb 12th, 2016 6AM-8AM Blackboard System Outage A network service interruption during scheduled network maintenance caused Blackboard to go down and subsequently disabled Blackboard's database. Service was restored alongside other Uwindsor applications.
Dec 8th 4 PM to Dec 9th 10:15 AM, 2015 Blackboard Email Notifications Outtage During this period an issue with the University's email system caused several Blackboard email notifications to not be sent. Tools affected include Announcements, Email and other general Blackboard notifications.
Nov 25th, 2015, 3PM Blackboard Database Outage An issue with the Blackboard database caused a temporary disruption to a portion of our Blackboard servers.
Nov 19th, 2015, 11:45 AM, 6:30 PM-12 AM, 7:30 AM-8 AM Blackboard Database Outage An issue with the Blackboard database caused a full service outage during these times. The problem has been resolved.
Oct 29th, 2015, 3:45PM Blackboard Server Error An unplanned server outage caused user errors (out of space) when students trying to upload assignments after 3:45 pm. The errors were similar to this: Could not parse multipart servlet request; nested exception is org.apache.commons.fileupload.FileUploadBase$IOFileUploadException: Processing of multipart/form-data request failed. There is not enough space on the disk. For reference, the Error ID is c4aee752-303b-49b2-9778-60f92bb0356e. The issue has now been resolved.
Sept 29th, 2015, 3 PM-5 PM Blackboard Database Issue The previously recorded issue occurred again and was permanently remedied by Blackboard Support.
Sept 26th, 2015 - Sept 28th, 2015 Blackboard Database Issues An issue with Blackboard's database caused instability during these dates. It resulted in a full system outage on Sept 28th from 3 PM-5 PM.
Sept 17th, 2015, 2:45 PM-3 PM University network outage An unplanned network outage caused users to be unable to reach the Blackboard system.
Apr 2nd, 2015, 7:30 AM-9 AM Blackboard System Outage A planned network configuration change external to the Blackboard system caused an unexpected outage for Blackboard.
Mar 28th, 2015, 5 AM-1 PM Planned Campus Wide Service Outage A planned campus-wide service outage caused Blackboard and many other systems to be unavailable.
Mar 27th, 2015, 5 AM-11 AM Blackboard System Outage An issue with the database server that serves Blackboard caused it to be unavailable for a number of hours.
