Blackboard Troubleshooting Guide

This guide will cover some of the common browser compatibility issues encountered by students and faculty and their solutions to ensure you are receiving the best Blackboard Learn experience. If you are unable to find the information for which you are looking for, please reach out to our helpdesk with a Service Request.

Is your Browser Up-To-Date?

Older versions of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox may not support recent Blackboard Learn releases. Users must have the proper system requirements to access Blackboard with no issues. Blackboard supports specific browser versions on desktop and mobile version. It is important for users to run the Blackboard Browser Checker Blackboard Browser Checker to verify that their system meets the minimum requirements for accessing Blackboard Learn on Google Chrome or Firefox. If you are required to update your browser to it's newest release, please follow the instructions below:

Updating Browser (Google Chrome)

  1. Click on the "Menu Icon" located in the upper-right corner of your Chrome Browser.
  2. Click "Help" from the Menu-list.
  3. Click "About Google Chrome".
  4. Click "Relaunch" to apply the new update. Important: If you can't find this button, you're on the latest version.

Updating Browser (Mozilla Firefox)

  1. Click on the Menu Icon in the Upper-Right Corner of the browser.
  2. Click on “Help” from the Menu-List.
  3. Click “About Firefox”. This will open the About Mozilla Firefox window. Firefox will check for updates and download them automatically.
  4. When the download is complete, click “Restart to Update Firefox”.

Enable Third-Party Cookies

Third-party cookies are enabled by default on all supported browsers. If you are experiencing issues staying logged in to Blackboard, please review your browser settings to make sure third-party cookies are allowed.

Enable Cookies (Google Chrome)

  1. Click on the "Menu Icon" located in the upper-right corner of your Chrome browser.
  2. Click “Settings” from the Menu-List.
  3. Along the left-hand side, click "Privacy and Security".
  4. Click "Site Settings" from the options provided.
  5. Scroll down to the content section, and click on "Cookies and Other Site Data".
  6. Next to “Sites that can Always use Cookies” click “Add”.
  7. Enter the Blackboard Web Address blackboard.uwindsor.ca (Important: Make sure the web address doesn't start with "http://.").
  8. Select “Add”.

Note: To remove an exception you do not want anymore, to the right of the website, click More, then “Remove”.

Enable Cookies (Mozilla Firefox)

  1. On your Mozilla Firefox Browser, go to blackboard.uwindsor.ca.
  2. To the left of the address bar, click on the "Shield Icon".
  3. Toggle the "Switch" at the top of the panel. This will enable cookies on your Blackboard site only.

Enable JavaScript

JavaScript is a standard programming language that can be included in web pages to provide functionality such as menus, sounds, and other interactive features. Almost every part of the Blackboard Learning Management System relies on JavaScript for the ability to generate interactive web pages. JavaScript is enabled by default on all supported browsers. If you are required to enable JavaScript in your browser, please follow the instructions below:

Enable JavaScript (Google Chrome)

By default, Chrome enables the use of JavaScript and requires no additional installation. To ensure JavaScript is enabled in your Google Chrome browser:

  1. Click on the “Menu Icon” located in the upper-right corner of your browser.
  2. Click the “Settings” option from the Menu-list.
  3. Click on “Privacy and Security” at the left side of your browser.
  4. Click “Site Settings”.
  5. Under the "Content" section, click “JavaScript”.
  6. Click the Sliding Control button beside “Allowed (recommended)” to toggle it on (dark blue will indicate it's "on").

Enable JavaScript (Mozilla Firefox)

By default, Firefox enables the use of JavaScript and requires no additional installation. There is no option to disable JavaScript in Mozilla Firefox, unless using an application add-on. If you are looking for more information, please visit the Mozilla Firefox JavaScript Support page.

Disable Pop-Up Blocker

Pop-ups use new windows and tabs to show material not being displayed on the current page. Pop-ups are disabled on chrome by default, many times this might prevent one from seeing test/quiz windows or opening some external links.

Disable Pop-Up Blocker (Google Chrome)

To disable pop-up blocking and allow pop-ups on Chrome, there are two ways to do it. It can either be enabled from the address bar or by going into settings.

To allow pop-ups through settings,

  1. Click on the "Menu Icon" located in the upper-right corner of your Chrome Browser.
  2. Click on "Settings" from the Menu-list.
  3. On the new page, under the privacy and security tab click on “Site Settings”.
  4. On the new page, under the content tab, click on “Pop-ups and Redirects”.
  5. Next to “Allow”, click on the "Add" button.
  6. In the site name, type in "blackboard.uwindsor.ca" and click "Add.

Disable Pop-Up Blocker (Mozilla Firefox)

To disable pop-up blocking and allow pop-ups on Firefox, there are two ways to do it. It can either be enabled from the address bar or by going to the options tab.

To allow pop-ups through options,

  1. Click on the Menu Icon in the Upper-Right Corner of the browser.
  2. From the menu-list, click on “Options”.
  3. Along the left-hand side, click "Privacy & Security".
  4. Scroll down to the "Permissions" section and click on “Exceptions” in the tab of the block pop-up window
  5. In the address bar type in "blackboard.uwindsor.ca" and click "Save Changes".
