Overview
BetterExaminations is an online examination software integrated with UWindsor's directory that automatically syncs all courses and students to the site. The software has a plethora of question types and can serve as an alternative to Blackboard's assessment tool for instructors who are looking for more advanced and customizable questions. This wiki article will cover all scoring methods in BetterExaminations, how to use them, considerations for using particular methods, and which question types the scoring methods are to be used for. Questions that require these alternate scoring methods are Math and Chemistry type questions.
Accessing BetterExaminations
To access BetterExaminations, go to https://uwindsorca.on.betterexaminations.com/ and it should automatically log you in using the University of Windsor's Single Sign On (SSO).
Alternatively, you can login to Blackboard by going to https://blackboard.uwindsor.ca/ and navigate to your course, then go to Control Panel -> Course Tools -> Better Exams to launch the software in a new browser window.

equivLiteral | The equivLiteral method checks that an expression is literally equal to the answer set. Both expressions should have the same form, order, elements, and values. Meaning the answer provided by the student must match exactly with the specified answer.
Ex. tan(x)= sin(x)/cos(x) |

equivValue | equivValue compares numerical values that may be represented in different ways. equivValue will evaluate the expression to a numerical form for comparison.
Ex. 700g=0.7kg |

isSimplified | The isSimplified method checks if a value is in its most simplified version. The method does not take any value and is most commonly used in conjunction with equivSymbolic.
Ex. 4/6 must be in the form 2/3 to be accepted as a correct answer. |

isFactorised | The isFactorised scoring method checks that a mathematical expression is in its factorized form. The method can handle polynomials up to degree 2, with a single variable (x/y). Make sure to specify the Field box to the appropriate factorised expression (integer, real numbers, complex numbers) . The method does not take any value and is most commonly used in conjunction with equivSymbolic.

isExpanded | The isExpanded scoring method checks that an expression is in its most expanded form. isExpanded doesn’t take any value and is most commonly used in conjunction with equivSymbolic.
Ex. 4(x+2) = 4x+8 |

isUnit | The isUnit scoring method is used for unit comparison and checks if the expression has the expected units in it. The isUnit method is commonly used in conjunction with equivValue.

isTrue | The isTrue scoring method checks that an expression has a comparison or equality, that is true; mainly used with Boolean operators. This method does not accept any value. When used alone, it will validate any mathematical expression that is true.

stringMatch | The stringMatch scoring method is used for literal string comparison. This compares the value set by authors in validation against a student's response, and evaluates if the two values are the same. stringMatch is a simple comparison method, and it does not take the syntax and data type that's set in the validation area into account.

DRAFT [equivSyntax] | The equivSyntax scoring method compares a LaTeX string against a syntax pattern specified in the validation settings.
This method is a purely syntactic check and is unaffected by numeric values. equivSyntax is used as a supporting method in combination with equivSymbolic and equivValue to constrain possible response options. |
